🍼 Diaper Rash 101: Irritant vs. Fungal – What’s the Difference? 👶
Diaper rashes are super common — but not all rashes are the same! Here’s how to tell the difference between irritant and fungal diaper rashes and how to care for your baby’s delicate skin 💕
🔹 Irritant Diaper Rash
👀 What it looks like: Red, inflamed skin mainly on areas that come into direct contact with the diaper (buttocks, thighs, genitals). No sharp edges or satellite spots.
💢 Caused by: Prolonged exposure to wet or soiled diapers, rubbing, or sensitivity to wipes or detergents.
🧴 Treatment:
• Keep the area clean and dry
• Use a barrier cream (like zinc oxide)
• Change diapers frequently
🛡️ Prevention: Change diapers often, pat skin dry, and use gentle wipes or plain water.
🔸 Fungal Diaper Rash (Yeast/Candida)
👀 What it looks like: Bright red rash with raised edges and small red bumps or “satellite lesions” that spread beyond the diaper area.
🌡️ Caused by: Overgrowth of yeast (Candida), often after antibiotic use or a lingering irritant rash.
🧴 Treatment:
• Apply an antifungal cream (ask your pediatrician)
• Continue using barrier creams
• Let baby’s skin breathe (diaper-free time!)
🛡️ Prevention: Prevent and treat irritant rashes early. Avoid unnecessary antibiotic use when possible.
💡When to call the doctor: If rash lasts >3 days, worsens, or shows signs of infection (oozing, fever, pain).
❤️ Every baby gets a rash at some point — you’re doing great. Knowing the signs helps you act fast!
